Add fields to a template

Updated 16 October 2026 · 2 min read

Fields (also called variables) make every card personal. You place a field such as {{firstName}} in a text, and each item fills in its own value. You manage fields under Data in the editor.

Recipient fields are always there

Under Recipient (required) the Data panel lists the address fields: name, address line 1 and 2, postal code, city and country. Every item has them, so you never add them yourself. You can also place them in a text, for example to greet the recipient by name.

Add a field

  1. Open Data in the editor rail.
  2. Choose Add field, type a name and choose Add. Use letters, digits and underscores, and start with a letter.
  3. Select a text on the card, choose Insert variable in the toolbar and pick your field.

You can also type the field straight into a text, for example Hello {{firstName}}.

Field names are case sensitive, and two names that differ only in case are not allowed. A field that the design uses cannot be removed.

Set the rules of a field

Choose the settings icon next to a field to open its Definition.

SettingWhat it does
Typetext, number, date (written as YYYY-MM-DD), boolean (true or false), url or imageUrl (a web address of an image).
RequiredAn item without a value cannot be printed and gets the status Needs attention.
FallbackThe value used when an item leaves the field empty.
Max lengthFor text: longer values make the item need attention.
DescriptionA note for your colleagues or developers.

Items are checked against these rules when they arrive. A missing required value, a wrong type or a value that is too long shows up as a warning. See Fix items that need attention.

Show or hide elements per item

Select an element, open Properties and turn on Conditional visibility. The element then only shows when a field is set, is not set, equals or does not equal a value. Use Show other state to check both versions.

Try it with sample data

Choose Preview to see the card with sample values. Switch between records, choose Random sample, or Use fallbacks to see what an item without values looks like.

Every field you add becomes a column to map when you upload a Postbatch list, and an input for your Salesforce flow or API call.
