Create a template
A template is the design of your card. It belongs to one product, which fixes the size, the sides and the print rules. Owners, Admins and Editors can create and edit templates.
Start a new template
- Open Templates and choose New template.
- Pick the Product.
- Under Start from, keep Blank or choose a ready-made design from the template library. The category buttons above the designs narrow the choice.
- Enter a Template name and choose Create and open editor.
The editor opens with the product's base design already in place, such as the address block, and with the design you chose. A template made from a library design is your own copy: change it as you like, later changes to the library do not touch it.
Parts marked Fixed by PostBuddy belong to the product: you cannot move or change them, or only in the ways the product allows. Some fixed parts always lie on top of your design, and some areas must stay clear: the editor shows them hatched with Must stay clear, and an element you add there moves to the nearest free place. You can move elements and images past the edge of the card; the part outside shows dimmed and is cut off in print.
The editor needs a desktop-sized screen. On a small window it asks you to widen it.
Find your way in the editor
The tools sit in the rail on the left.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text | Adds headings, subheadings and text, and holds the fonts of the template. |
| Images | Your organisation's images: upload, place or use as a full-bleed background. |
| Shapes | Rectangles, ellipses and lines. |
| Data | The recipient fields and your own template fields, with sample values. |
| Codes | QR codes and barcodes. |
| Uploads | Upload an image or a font. |
| Layers | Every element of the side in stacking order, with show, hide and lock. |
Select an element to change it in the toolbar above the page, or open its Properties. Switch between the front and back of the card with the side switcher.
Saving
The editor saves your draft automatically and shows the save status at the top. If someone else saved the same draft in the meantime, you choose between Reload their version and Overwrite with mine.
Your design stays a draft until you publish it. Postflows and Postbatches can only use published versions. See Publish a version.
Organise your templates
- Choose New folder to group templates, and Move to folder on a template to file it.
- Duplicate makes a copy, optionally for another product. Check every element's position afterwards, because sizes differ between products.
- Archive template removes it from the list. Its published versions stay available to the items that use them.
Designed your card elsewhere? Upload the artwork under Images and choose Use as full-bleed background. Then add your fields on top. See Images and fonts.
Open a support ticket in the portal. Tell us what you tried and, if you can, which item or Postbatch it is about.
